Behind the Design

In true ako spirit, this is the learning that happens behind the design, behind the learning. Behind the Builds is part reflection, part experimentation, and all about growing through the creative process.

It started with a challenge: build something eye-catching using only Storyline’s shapes — no stock art, no imports, no shortcuts.

So I built a factory, broke its machine, and invited learners to fix it.

Purpose

This was my response to an Articulate E-Learning Challenge focused on merge shapes. My goal was to stretch Storyline’s creative limits and prove that good design doesn’t depend on external assets, it comes from what you can do with the tools already in your hands.

Process in 3 Acts

Act 1 – The Spark

I’ve always been fascinated by how things fit together, both in machines and in learning. The idea of a broken factory felt like a perfect metaphor for problem-solving and design thinking. The concept: a playful rebuild game that rewards curiosity and experimentation.

Act 2 – The Build

Every visual element was handcrafted from Storyline’s native shapes:

  • Gears merged from circles and triangles
  • Pipes from rounded rectangles and connectors
  • Control panels from simple rectangles with subtracted cut-outs
  • The riddle mechanic added depth — each correct drop clicked satisfyingly into place, while wrong answers triggered light-hearted feedback.
  • AI-generated audio and sound effects brought the factory to life, turning a static screen into a dynamic experience.

Act 3 – The Insight

When it all came together, I realised this wasn’t just an art experiment — it was a reminder that constraints are fuel for creativity. Designing entirely inside Storyline forced me to think like both artist and engineer.

Lessons for Others

  • Don’t underestimate native tools — mastery often beats plugins.
  • Use constraints to your advantage; they focus your creativity.
  • Sound and feedback transform static visuals into interactive storytelling.

Closing Reflection

“Sometimes the best builds come from limits — because creativity loves a good constraint.”
