Behind the Design

In true ako spirit, this is the learning that happens behind the design, behind the learning. Behind the Builds is part reflection, part experimentation, and all about growing through the creative process.

It started with a simple question: Can a self-awareness quiz feel alive?

Most conflict-style questionnaires live on paper; static, reflective, and quickly forgotten. I wanted to bring that same insight into a digital space where learners could see themselves in real time.

Purpose

This build was about turning a traditional diagnostic tool into an interactive, personalised learning experience. I wanted learners to explore how they respond to conflict, and facilitators to use the results as conversation starters in blended workshops.

Why use it in a blended programme?

  • Pre-work or warm-up activity: Learners complete the quiz before a workshop. Facilitators can then build discussion around their styles and triggers.

  • Reflection tool: It gives learners personalised insights to bring into coaching sessions or leadership programmes.

  • Ongoing resource: Because results can be saved or printed, learners can return to their profiles when conflict arises in real life.

Process in 3 Acts

Act 1 – The Spark

The idea came from revisiting an old paper questionnaire used in leadership programmes. It had potential but no interactivity other than pen and paper, no instant feedback, no connection to learners’ real triggers. I wondered: What if I could rebuild it inside Rise, fully digital, and instantly insightful?

Act 2 – The Build

Using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript inside Rise’s new HTML Code block, I built a 25-item questionnaire from scratch. Each question used a 1–5 rating scale that auto-scored across five conflict styles. Learners could immediately see which style dominated, what triggered them, and which calming strategies helped most.

It wasn’t a plug-and-play process; styling, logic, and storage all needed fine-tuning. But once the pieces clicked, it worked seamlessly within Rise, no external tools, no iframes, just clean interactivity.

Advantages of the HTML Code Block in Rise

Using Rise’s new HTML Code feature to embed the quiz has big benefits:

  • Customisation: I could design the look, scoring logic, and result explanations without being limited to standard Rise quiz types.

  • Interactivity inside Rise: No need to jump out to an external survey tool, learners stay in the same smooth, mobile-friendly learning journey.

  • Scalability: Once built, the block can be reused across multiple modules, topics, or programmes.

  • Blended learning ready: Because it works online, offline (as a SCORM package), and on any device, it’s flexible for both self-paced eLearning and classroom integration.

Act 3 – The Insight

Seeing the results render dynamically inside Rise was the “aha” moment. It proved that custom-coded experiences don’t have to break the flow of learning, they can elevate it. Learners stayed engaged, facilitators got richer discussions, and the build bridged digital learning with human reflection.

Lessons for others

  • Use the new HTML Code block to prototype quickly, it’s surprisingly powerful.

  • Keep your logic modular so you can reuse it across topics.

  • Small touches like progress saving or trigger mapping make the experience more personal.

Closing Reflection

“Turning paper into pixels isn’t just digital transformation, it’s giving self-awareness a heartbeat.”
